CONFINEMENT 101
No washing of hair? No drinking of water? Tonics and herbs for a month of confinement??
For first-time mothers, you may have heard many golden rules to abide by during the month of confinement. These may be from your own family and relatives, your friends, or forums online. It may all be very overwhelming, but fret not! Lao Ban Niang has more than 30 years of experience in the local TCM scene and we have been helping mothers with their confinement needs.
In recent years, we introduced our confinement soup and herbal tea packages to make the confinement experience fuss-free and enjoyable for mothers. We are also actively reaching out to mothers through baby fairs and exhibitions and are recognized for our quality herbs and service (and awarded the 'Best Confinement Food 2020' by SuperMom!).
In this quick crash course, we will introduce the main dos and don'ts of confinement and share the range of products we have that cater to your confinement needs!
DON'T: Drink plain water
After birth, most mothers will be experiencing 'cold' bodies. As such, it is advisable to avoid drinking plain water as it is cooling. Plain water also increases water retention.
As a substitute for plain water, the essential drink for confinement is the Red Dates and Longan Tea. It nourishes the blood, replenishes energy and boosts the immunity system. At Lao Ban Niang, we offer the 30 Days Confinement Herbal Tea Package where the herbs for each day is packed individually for your convenience. Simply boil the herbs with about 2 litres of water for your day's supply!
DO: Recover with nutritious meals
Confinement is a time for healing and it is even more important for mothers to eat the right food. TCM herbs are helpful in boosting the strength and immunity system.
At Lao Ban Niang, our 30 Days Confinement Herbal Soup Package has been specially formulated according to the body condition at each stage of the confinement. The herbal soup is meant to be taken during a meal (preferably dinner) and can be cooked with your choice of meat or vegetables. It consists of 3 phases:
Phase 1 (Day 1-10): HEAL. Nourishes your body and cleanses your womb.
Phase 2 (Day 11-20): ADJUST. Adjusting your inner Qi and nourishes your Yin.
Phase 3 (Day 21-30): STRENGTHEN. Provides a boost of energy, strengthens your body and builds up your immunity system.
Our package also includes 2 packets of Sheng Hua Tang which helps to promote recovery of the womb.
DON'T: Shower with cold water
It is a common Chinese belief that during confinement, the mother should not shower with cold water (especially the hair!) to prevent 'wind-cold' from entering the body. However, with the hot and humid Singapore weather, it is impossible to stay sane without having a good shower. It is also important to stay clean and hygienic, especially for breastfeeding mums. So... how?
No worries! Our Lao ban Niang Confinement Herbal Bath is a traditional Chinese herbal bath that helps to expel wind and dampness, prevent and relief rheumatic condition. Boil the herb sachet in water and shower with the herbal bath. Our herbal bath smells pretty good with a hint of mint! You can pair our herbal bath with your usual shampoo and soap.
Do: Lots of tender loving care for you and your baby!
Confinement care is not just about the mother, your new-born baby will need lots of care as well! At LBN, we have confinement products for the baby's wellbeing:
